The "Sounds of Shearing" The "Sounds of Shearing" was originally a one time gig, done as a tribute to George Shearing and the Quintet, which performed in the early 1950s through the 1980s. The Shearing sound is the feature of our group; with Piano, Vibes, and Guitar playing the melody in unison. We played the Tribute at "Jazz at the Hamlet" in Cambria, California, which has become quite a famous Jazz venue. The night that we played, the audience loved it, and word got around. A booking agency got in touch with Charlie Shoemake and, as a result, we are now doing gigs. Three members of our group, Charlie, Ron Anthony, and myself are former members of the George Shearing Quintet. The "Sounds of Shearing" (left to right) are: Joe Bagg—piano, Ron Anthony—guitar, Charlie Shoemake—leader and vibes, Luther Hughes—bass, and Colin Bailey—drums. Check out the live performance videos of "East of the Sun", "Jumpin' with Symphony Sid", and "Lester Leaps In".
